Because…
Ah! What a time of year! The first few months of the year are always incredibly busy for me. Work is predictably hectic and coaching basketball is in full swing, so there is precious little time left for doing any new projects around the house or to play much online. This evening however I had some free time on hand, so I thought I might start organizing and thinning out the club room and storage area of our home’s rec level (a nice word for finished basement).
The club room is currently home to my original stereo system, a holdover dating back from my college days along with a fairly large collection of record albums. What memories college and that stereo bring back! Life was definitely simpler, the possessions austere. Furniture motif was “Early Parents”, cobbled together with some thrift store lamps, cinder block bookshelves, and of course, a $1,000 stereo system with dozens of albums. Priorities you know…
Where was I? Oh yes, organizing the club room and storage. I thought to myself, why not put one of those old albums on the old stereo and have some music to listen to while organizing? Just flipping through each album was a fun, nostalgic experience, bringing back memories of when I bought each one, looking at the album art, and feeling the different textures of the album covers. I settled in with one of my old favorites I haven’t listened to in ages: The Beatles – Abbey Road. I fired up the old turntable, flipped on the receiver and put on the vinyl. Man oh man, I forgot how nice that old stereo sounds. I had also forgotten how talented and fantastic the three part harmony was on Because…
With the music playing, my wife peeked in and came downstairs to see what in the world I was doing, which was basically me sitting on the floor and not doing much of anything. I asked her to join me, while I ran upstairs and poured us a few glasses of wine. We both just sat on the floor, and we listened, and we chatted like a couple of college kids back in the day. What a pleasant, nostalgic moment.
No, we didn’t get much work accomplished around the house tonight. Who cares?
Youtube now has the entire album uploaded if you are interested. Here’s hoping you enjoy your evening as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sounds like a perfect way to spend and evening to me.
Spontaneous is always fun.
That psychedelic picture nearly knocked me to the floor. You really ought to warn a dizzy girl!
That being said, this was a lovey post. You are a true romantic. Abbey Road. Great times. Great music. I’m glad you and your wife had an evening of wine, music and …
Gosh, I didn’t realize how much that post sounds like a Cialis commercial. All that seems missing are the two bathtubs. Yikes…
Nothing wrong with that, Phil. Nothing at all.
And that darned psychedelic graphic that hits me when I hop onto your site wouldn’t be what a Cialis marketing firm would pick as their “go to” campaign logo.
Should I change that graphic? I don’t want you avoiding my blog because that illusion is aggravating your sense of dizziness. Or maybe I should just list a disclaimer of the side effects of staring at it, kind of like the drug companies do.
Nah. It’s an eye-catcher and most people will love it. I’ll just close my eyes and scroll. You’re worth it!
Well, now that you say it, it did have a Cialis tone to it but those people seem so happy and peaceful in those commercials. At any rate, it all sounds like a soothing evening. I can picture you in you college jacket and all. A little on the tight end but cute all the same.
I was more of a college hippie than one of them preppie types. Picture a large head of hair with a headband, fu-manchu mustache, patched bell bottom blue jeans, and a tie-dye T. I was a real Carlos Santana wannabe.
Chatting and sipping wine sounds absolutely lovely!
My eye balls couldn’t pull away from the graphic … I’ve never taken acid, but I think I’ve come close just now …
I love optical illusions, and this one has quite the hypnotic effect of grabbing your attention.
–Ahhhhh, Phil,
I love how you both sat on the floor listeing to the Beatles, chatting, & sipping wine together….
I just looove it.
Xxx Kisses
It was a nice diversion from a more well-worn routine. Spontaneous is fun and romantic.
Ah – nostalgia isn’t what it used to be!
Sounds a lovely way to pass an evening. I do hope you didn’t end up as psychedelic as that picture you posted…
No ladyfi, other than the wine, we spent the evening in an unaltered state of consciousness.
I enjoyed listening to Beatle’s “Because”, and the lovely chat, hhhhmmmm that was sweet
Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks for sharing
P.S. and the graphic art seemed fascinating too
Thanks. Enjoy your weekend as well.
And so it was a wonderful evening of nostalgic wickedness then?
I rather like that idea Phil, I hope that you cracked open a bottle of something tasteful and… Well the rest is of a private nature and I am thinking of opening a few bottles myself sometime very soon
Have a great rest of weekend Phil and keep up the good work on the coaching…
Andro, I’ll grab my wickedness and naughtiness any way I can…
I have all the Beatles records. I’d not noticed how perfect the harmony is on Because. I think now-a-days one singer can use a machine to add his voice a third above the tune which is also his voice. If you know more about how harmony is made this way, add it here.
My understanding is you can certainly use the computer technology to both auto-tune and to harmonize, although a quick search of the tutorials out there leave me believing it is easier to understand a space rocket launch than to create the harmony with any true success. Further, the harmony (3rds and 5ths) created is not true and accurate to the original voice. It sounds a lot more like the chipmunks harmonizing. The voice is still the most complex instrument around as it moves up and down in register, not easily created in the computer world, and that’s a good thing in my opinion.
Viva la voce!
Got to be a joker…yep, takes me WAAAAY back.
Good deal, a good night, sounds wonderful!
The initial psychedelic pix…and I didn’t even partake of that stuff. Makes one a bit woozy — “all the colors, they move..” whew! Me is just happy with a new washer–#6 now Phil. You called it!
Carol, it’s either that graphic that has you woozy, or maybe watching that spin cycle of your new washer a bit too long. Still, I can understand your excitement!
Entirely romantic. Unless of course it came with a priapism warning.
Red.
LOL! Although I’m pretty sure that if I had an erection lasting more than 4 hours, I’d not only tell the doctor about it, I would tell EVERYONE about it!!!
fantastic when you can just enjoy yourselves out of the blue phil i often play ozzy and loose myself have a great week that certainly makes you cross eyed the image i mean although a few glasses of wine does too lol xxjen
Those unexpected moments are always the most fun. I’m sure a few glasses or more of wine will not help the cross-eyed problem with that graphic. I’m going to need a new post soon or everyone will get major nausea.
Nice Find, Abbey Road is my Favorite Beatles Album… Thanks for that
