Random Jukebox – Billie Holiday Edition

February 22, 2012 22 comments

It’s getting late, the Dinner Party has run its course and appears to be long done, clean up crews have scrubbed and detailed the Random Thoughts home from top to bottom, and the place seems a bit quiet and empty.  All the rowdy guests migrated over to Mardi Gras, and I’m happy to report all had fun with no serious problems, save for a few morning-after headaches experienced by a few of our followers.

Me?  I’ll be traveling the next few days.  I’ll be scarce around these parts, but tonight I think I’ll pour myself a nice elixir from the bar and toss a few coins in the Jukebox for the evening as I unwind a little before turning in for the evening.  Come on and join me.  Go ahead, walk over the the bar.  There’s a guy in a white jacket and black bow-tie waiting to serve you.  Kick off your shoes and put up your feet, or, if you are so inclined, grab your sweetheart and spend a few moments dancing cheek to cheek.  I’ll start it off with a few from the Billie Holiday songbook – such a hauntingly soulful voice.

While I’m gone, feel free to throw a few coins in the ole Jukebox and dial up a song of your choice in the comment section below.  Anything goes – any style, artist, and genre.  I’d love to hear what you pick out.  I’ll try to peek in whenever I can to get a listen.  In the meantime, enjoy the company of each other and behave.  Or maybe not…

It’s Mardi Gras – Is Your Mojo Working?

February 21, 2012 19 comments

It’s Mardi Gras once again. Fat Tuesday, the official finale in festive and inebriated manner of the Carnival season – one last day of reckless, wanton behavior before everyone gets all spiritual on Ash Wednesday, the official start of lenten abstinence. Yes, whoop it up one last time, and whoop it up good!

As a public service announcement, since so many of you may be imbibing in excess, I thought I’d pass along some helpful information dealing with the morning after.  See, you may not remember much the following day, after a long night of whoop ass drinking and carousing er… festivities. When you do finally awaken from that drunken stupor and, if you believe you’ve gone to church to get your ashes, just make sure the markings look something like this:

And not like this:

Enjoy the festivities!

In the News – Random Thoughts on Birth Control

February 18, 2012 29 comments

Strange times we live in for sure.  Yesterday, a House Congressional Committee held a hearing on the President’s policy to ensure all women have access to contraceptive coverage with no co-pay.  Who better of course to discuss the merits of women’s access to contraceptives than… well… men?  Well, not only men, but men of the clergy.

Raise your hand if you've ever knocked up a chick. OK, you're all qualified to testify.

Apparently there were a few women eager to testify why birth control is rather important to them, one of them a law student and another an executive at a Catholic Non-Profit organization, but doggone it, neither were members of the clergy.  See, the point apparently was to have some politically motivated theater er… testimony regarding exemptions from contraceptive and reproductive insurance requirements based on religious and moral grounds. Nope, apparently women should have no say about this kind of coverage mandate to be included in health insurance.

In the interest of fairness and reciprocity, I believe there should be alternate hearings scheduled to hear testimony about insurance coverage mandates as they relate to men’s Erectile Dysfunction and the associated treatment of such with pharmaceuticals like Viagra and Cialis. And of course, who better qualified to testify as expert witnesses on such matters of men and their sexual proclivities than this fine group of ladies?

Lips that touch ED drugs shall never touch ours. Come to think of it, neither shall any other body part for that matter...

Have at it, everyone!

Ad Hoc Random Dinner Party

February 11, 2012 90 comments

I realize I haven’t been around much lately; you know – that blasted work and business travel eating into my WordPress time once again.  I’ve been missing out on a lot of good writing and conversation lately.  I have an idea, one that won’t require me to do a lot of writing of my own original material, and one that gives visitors something interesting to do even when I’m not immediately around.  So…

How about we have a casual dinner party at the Random Thoughts home?

No special time – just drop in whenever you wish, grab a drink, enjoy a little food and conversation with others who are around.  I’ve got White Wine and Beer in the fridge, Red Wine on the counter, an assortment of hard liquors on the buffet, and a bunch of other soft beverages for everyone else.  Help yourself, there’s plenty to be found.  Since this is a spontaneous gathering, I haven’t planned out any dinner.  We’ll order in whatever you want when you get here, and serve it up buffet style.  Casual and quaint.

Please!  Everyone feel free to mix and mingle with the others in the comments section.  Have fun getting to know each other as you please.  Any topics will do.  I’ve extended out the reply features so you can converse with each other on just about anything you’d like to discuss.  I realize that Blogs are not quite the vehicle to accomplish this, but I’ve never been one to really follow convention anyway.  Some of the more interesting blogs I visit have a lively comments section filled with banter and fun.  That’s far more fun than the perfunctory comments about how much everyone enjoyed my post or agreed with what I said.  Talk to each other!!!

OK, let me know what you want to eat – I’ll put in the order.  Can I pour you a drink in the meantime?  What’s your pleasure?

Someone, get the conversation started…

Ground Hog Day 2012

February 2, 2012 22 comments

Cloudy - promising for Ground Hogs afraid of their shadow

Well, no sunshine and no shadow for that furry critter that forecasts the severity of winters.  It was quite warm today 60 degrees (15 degrees C for my Fahrenheit-challenged friends across the pond).  The cherry blossoms are confused enough to think Spring is already here.  Let’s hope they are not wrong.

What do you think?  Ready for Spring?
